Breast Milk is Superior Infant Food

No one has ever proved otherwise. The highest praise a formula manufacturer can give his product is that it is "most like mother's milk" or "nearer to mother's milk" - there is nothing suprior.

Breast milk always has the right propotions of fat, carbohydrates and protein. Formula companies are constantly adjusting these proportions looking for the best composition.

The reality is that a mother's milk composition changes from feeding to feeding depending on the needs of her child.

Infant formula can never duplicate human milk, which contains at least 100 ingredients not found in formula. Among them are living cells, hormones, active enzymes, immunoglobulins and compounds with unique structures - all of which cannot be replicated in infant formula.

Breast milk is more digestible than formula

Babies can digest human milk more easily than the milk of other animals, probably because human milk contains an enzyme that aids in this process. Breast milk forms softer curds in the infant's stomach than cow's milk (the basis for most formula) and is more quickly assimilated into the body system.

While it contains less protein than does cow's milk, virtually all the protein in breast milk is available to the the baby. By contrast, about half the protein in cow's milk passes through the baby's body as a waste product. Similarly, iron and zinc are absorbed better by breastfed babies.

Perfect food for sick baby

When a formula-fed baby gets a gastrointestinal ailment they are usually put on an artificial electrolyte solution because formula is too hard for them to digest. Breast milk, however, is easily digested, and soothing to the intestines, so there is no need for artificial and expensive electrolyte solutions.

If a baby gets a respiratory illness, formula may cause even more mucus.In contrast, breast milk contains antibodies to these ailments, as well as being highly digestible and not contributing to excess mucus formation.

Breast milk contains no genetically engineered materials

Breast milk actually contains chemicals that suppress pain (endorphins).Many a bruise or scrape has been soothed away almost instantly by a few moments of nursing. If you choose to have your child vaccinated, it is a good idea to nurse immediately after he/she receives a vaccination. This soothes the hurt.

Breastfeed babies get fewer cavities

Bottle-fed babies are at increased risk for baby bottle caries, a destructive dental condition which occurs when a baby is put to bed with a bottle containing formula, milk, juice or other fluids high in carbohydrates. Expensive and extensive dental repair may be required.

If the teeth come in straight, there's no need to fix them-meaning less money spent on corrective orthodontics treatment.

Less chance of baby getting eczema

• According to 1995 Lancet study, breastfeeding for 6 months can prevent eczema in babies during the first 3 years.
• Another study published in the British Medical Journal found that eczema was less common and milder in babies who were breastfed (22%). Instead, in infants fed casein hydrolysate, soymilk, or cow's milk, 21%, 63% and 70% respectively developed atopic eczema.
• An American study that followed over 20,000 babies for 5 years found that there were 7 times as many babies with eczema in the bottle-fed group as in those completely breastfed. And babies given some breast and some bottle milk were twice as likely to get eczema as the totally breastfed ones.

Less chance of hernia

Breastfeeding is protective against inguinal hernias. For unknown reasons breastfed babies experience significantly fewer of them.

Breastfeeding decrease chances of maternal osteoporosis in later life

The odds that a woman with osteoporosis did not breastfeed her baby was 4 times higher than for a control woman.

Dr. Alan Lucas of the MRC Childhood Nutrition Research Center if London, found that 8-year-olds who were fed formula rather than breastfeed as infants, had less developed bone mineralization than those fed breast milk.

Breastfed babies have less chance of cardiopulmonary distress while feeding

According to a 1990 study, bottle-fed babies are at increased risk of cardiopulmonary disturbances, including prolonged airway closure and obstructed breaths due to repeated swallowing.

Breastfeed babies have less chance of developing ulcerative colitis

This is disease of later life (a severe inflammatory disorder of the colon characterised by the passage of blood and pus), which may be connected with type of feeding in infancy and especially the early introduction of solids.

• In one survey, it was found that people with ulcerative colitis were twice as likely as "normal" people never to have been breastfed.
  
  
• Another study showed that people with long-standing ulcerative colitis had high levels of antibodies to cow's milk protein in their blood.

Breastfed babies have less chance of developing necrotising enterecolitis, a bowel infection with high death rate seen almost exclusively in the bottle-fed

Although this is a rare disease, it is virtually never seen in the breastfed child.

What is Diaper?

The Purpose of Cloth Diaper
The purpose of a diaper is to absorb moisture and contain mess so that the wearer can remain dry and comfortable after wetting or soiling themselves. When diapers become full and can no longer hold any more waste, they require changing.

• Earlier toilet training.This may not hold true in every case, but there's no denying that cloth diapers are a lot more "realistic" than disposables. A wet cloth diaper feels wet to a child, whereas a disposable diaper continues to feel dry.

• Less diaper rashes. No doubt, it may depends on the child, but that cloth seems to maintain a better moisture environment for my daughter's skin than disposables. You can also feel more easily when your child is wet and change her as often as necessary. And there's no increased cost if you need to change your child more often with cloth diapers, whereas with disposables it can really add up if you are changing your babe more frequently due to rash or diarrhea. One study from the Journal of Pediatrics indicates that 54% of one month olds in disposable diapers had some type of rash, 16% were severe. Rash medication can be expensive. Preliminary data from the University of North Caroline/Duke University researches indicates breastfed children were only 40% as likely to develop juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Two studies have shown that breastfed babies walk earlier than bottle-fed babies even after allowing for differences in weight between the 2 groups and excluding babies whose mothers went out to work (because they might possibly have been less stimulated to walk).

Tongue thrust problems often develop among bottle-fed babies as they try to slow down the flow of milk coming from the artificial nipple. This can lead to speech problem. as well as mouth-breathing, lip-biting, gum disease and a generally unattractive appearance.

Better Social Skills

A study in Hungary found that breastfeeding in the first 3 months of life greatly improves a child;s social maturity (as well as psychomotor, ie physical movement,skills). This is encouraged by human contact during feeding (a nursing mother must cuddle her infant closely many times during the day). At birth, infant see only 12-15 inches, the distance between a nursing baby and its mother's face. This gives child an important early start in human interaction.

Facilitates Proper Dental and Jaw Development

Suckling at the breast is good for baby's tooth and jaw development. Babies at the breast have to use as much as 60 times more energy to get food than do those drinking from a bottle.

As the babies' jaw muscles are strenuously exercised in suckling,their constant pulling encourages the growth of well-formed jaws and straight, healthy teeth.

Among breastfed infant, the longer the duration of nursing, the lower the incidents of malocclusion (faulty mouth and jaw development).

Many specialist report that they see fewer such problems in breastfed babies. In one survey of nearly 500 children with such problems, only 2 had been breastfed.

Breastfed Babies Have Higher IQs

• According to a University of Bristol paper published in Early Human Development in 1997, in 8 out of 10 population studies, and 3 studies of low birth weight infants, it has been consistently shown that children who have been breastfed are on average intellectually more able than bottle-fed children. The longer the child has been breastfed, the more pronounced the effect. 
• Another study of nearly 400 children using several tests showed that the highest IQs (of 130 or higher) were obtained by children who had been breastfed for between 4 and 9 months.
• In another study of 771 low-birth weight infants, babies whose mothers chose to provide breast milk had an 8-point advantage in a mental development test over infants of mothers choosing not to do so.
• In Spain, a 1994 study of 229 breastfed and bottle-fed infants from birth to 2 years found lower mental development in the bottle-fed infants.
• In Britain, a 1995 follow-up study of children booked into antenatal clinics found further evidence of the association between breastfeeding and child intelligence - significantly higher mental development was seen in the breastfed children studied. 

Breastfed Babies Have Better Language Development

A New Zealand study found that breastfed children have higher language development (as well as intelligence test) scores at ages 3, 5 and 7 than children who were not breastfed.

Better Educational Achievement

The latest study to support this statement was done in New Zealand in 1998. Here an 18-year study of over 1,000 children found that those who were breastfed as infants had both better intelligence and greater academic achievement that children who were infant-formula fed.

Better Reading Comprehension and Mathematical Ability

The above New Zealand study also found that increasing the duration of breastfeeding results in significant increase in reading comprehension and mathematical ability.

• Carrying your baby promotes bonding and enhances parents' feelings of competence. A higher frequency of feeding and touching stimulates mothering hormones, and frequent carrying encourages and speeds the development of a mutual reading of each other's cues.
