Breastfeed Working Mom (III) - Cleaning A Breast Pump

Can I Sterilize My Breast Pump At Home?

It is impossible to completely sterilize your breast pump at home. Some hospitals offer free or fee-based sterilization services using an autoclave meant for sterilizing reusable surgical tools and hospital equipment.

Not even boiling them at home will completely sterilize breast pump parts. However, you can keep your breast pump safe and sanitary by effectively washing away germs and bacteria after each use.

General Tips for Cleaning Your Breast Pump

Consult the instruction manual included with your breast pump for the manufacturer-recommend method of cleaning. Keep in mind that not all pieces of a breast pump are meant to be washed. Electrical units and batteries should be wiped down after use, but never submerged in water.

Typically, a pump must be taken apart before appropriate pieces are washed. Most washable pump pieces can be cleaned by hand using soap and hot water. Some pumps can be put in the dishwasher. Consult your instruction manual to make sure pieces are dishwasher safe before you put them in the dishwasher.

Basic Cleaning Method

  • Take apart the pump. Consult the instruction manual to determine which parts should be washed.

  • Wash each piece separately using liquid dishwashing soap and plenty of warm water.
Rinse each piece thoroughly with hot water for 10 -15 seconds.

  • Place the pieces neatly on a clean paper towel or in a clean drying rack and allow them to air dry.

  • Avoid using a cloth towel to dry your pump because they can carry germs and bacteria that are harmful to your breast milk and your baby.

  • Once the pump is dry, assemble it before storing. Try not to touch the inside of any parts that will come in contact with your milk the next time you pump.

Breastfeed Working Mom (II) - Using A Breast Pump

How Do I Use A Breast Pump?

Before using your breast pump for the first time it is a good idea to read through the entire instruction manual. The instruction manual can help you learn the right way to assemble and use your pump. It should also include the manufacturer's contact information. If the instruction manual is missing from the box, check the outside of the box for a customer service line you can call to request a copy.

Wash and Dry Your Hands

Before using your pump, wash your hands with soap, scrubbing for 10 -15 seconds, then rinse with plenty of warm water. After washing, dry your hands thoroughly with a clean paper towel.

You do not need to wash your breasts before you pump unless you have been using a cream, ointment, or other product on your breasts that must be removed first. Check the labels on products you have been using and ask your doctor for advice.

Assemble Your Pump

Consult your pump's instruction manual for the proper way to assemble your pump.

Get Comfortable

Find a clean and comfortable place where you can relax and not be disturbed while pumping. If you have an electric pump, find an area near an out let so you can plug the pump in. Some mothers find it helpful to hold their baby, or to have a picture of their baby in front of them while they pump.

Position the Breast-Shield(s)

Consult your instruction manual for tips on positioning your nipple in the breast-shiled(s). Your nipple should fit comfortably in the center of the opening in the breast-shield(s). Gently adjust the breast-shield(s) until it feels comfortable without pinching, pulling or otherwise irritating your nipple or breast tissue.

Begin Pumping

If your pump is electric or battery-powered, turn the switch to the on position. If you are using a manual pump, begin pumping. Consult your instruction manual for suggestions on an appropriate pumping speed. Adjust the speed until you find one that is comfortable for you.

How Long Should I Pump and What Can I Expect?

A qualified health care professional can help determine the best pumping method for you. The amount of milk produced is different for everyone. A typical pumping session lasts about 10 -15 minutes per breast, but you should only pump as long as it is comfortable and productive for you.

Your breast milk may not flow immediately after you start pumping, so try to be patient. When it does flow, your milk should be collected in the container attached to your pump. If milk is leaking out of your pump, stop pumping and make sure you have assembled the pump correctly before trying again. If your pump continues to leak, call the manufacturer's customer service line for help.

When you have finished pumping gently insert a finger between your breast and the breast-shield to break the vacuum seal. Remove the bottle of milk from the rest of the pump, and label the bottle with the date and time of pumping before storing it in the refrigerator or freezer.

Breastfeed Working Mom (I) - Choosing a Breast Pump

Choosing a Breast Pump - What Type of Breast Pump Is Right For Me?

Manual or electric, single or double-alternating pump, buy or rent? With the number of options available choosing the most suitable breast pump for your pumping needs can be tricky.

Keep in mind that there is no one-size-fits-all breast pump; what worked well for your mother or best friend may not work well for you. Choosing your ideal breast pump is a decision best made after considering your needs and weighing all of the options.

There are several factors that can help determine your ideal breast pump. The following sections provide a brief outline of points to consider when choosing a pump. If you are having difficulty choosing a pump, a qualified healthcare professional can help guide your decision based on the following factors:

1) How do you plan to use the pump?
  • Are you using a pump in addition to breastfeeding?

  • Do you plan to pump and store several containers of milk?

  • Are you returning to work?

  • Will you be away from your baby for several days?

2) How much time will it take you to pump?

  • The amount of time it takes to pump varies, but certain types of breast pumps may be easier to use and extract milk faster.

  • If you plan to pump at work or do not have a lot of time to pump, you may want to consider a battery or electrically powered breast pump. Double and double-alternating pumps may also decrease the amount of time it takes to pump because both breasts can be emptied at the same time.

3) Are the pump's instructions easy for you to understand?
  • Review the instructions included with several different pumps and choose a pump that is easy for you to assemble, use, clean, and take apart. If you are shopping for a pump in a store, ask a salesperson if the store has display breast pumps so you can practice assembling and taking apart several different pumps before you buy one.

  • Keep in mind that for health reasons most stores will not allow you to return a breast pump.

4) Where will you be using a pump?
  • Manual and battery-powered pumps can be easy to transport and use in small spaces, while an electric pump will require an outlet to power the pump and may be difficult to transport.

  • It is important that women who use a powered breast pump are prepared for emergency situations when electricity or extra batteries may not be available. Having extra supplies for pumping and a back-up method, such as a manual breast pump, may help a woman maintain her breast pumping schedule during an emergency.

5) Do you need a pump that is easy to transport?

  • If you travel frequently, or plan to pump at work consider buying a light-weight pump such as manual breastpump that transports easily in a carrying case that holds the pump and your pumping supplies.

  • If you plan to pump in the same place every time, you may not need to worry about how easy it is to transport.

6) Will the breast-shields fit you?

  • Make sure that the breast-shield opening is the correct size for you. You should be able to comfortably center your nipple inside the breast-shield. Many pumps are sold with one size of breast-shield. If the included breast-shields make your nipples sore or are otherwise uncomfortable, make sure you can replace them with a different size or texture that is comfortable for you and will work with your pump.
Should I Buy a Used Breast Pump or Share a Breast Pump?

You should never buy a used breast pump or share a breast pump.

Only FDA cleared, hospital-grade pumps should be used by more than one person. With the exception of hospital-grade pumps, the FDA considers breast pumps single-use devices. That means that a breast pump should only be used by one woman because there is no way to guarantee the pump can be cleaned and disinfected between uses by different women.

The money you may save by buying a used pump is not worth the health risks to you or your baby. Breast pumps that are reused by different mothers can carry infectious diseases, such as HIV or hepatitis.

Buying a used breast pump or sharing a breast pump may be a violation of the manufacturer's warranty and you may not be able to get help from the manufacturer if you have a problem with the pump.

How to Wash Cloth Diaper?

General Care and Washing Instructions

Caring for cloth diapers is usually as simple as doing a couple extra loads of laundry a week. We recommend you start with a simple routine, then if you have problems, start trying variations. Your water, washing machine, and climate can make a difference in what works. NOTE: These instructions apply to everything except wool. Here is the basic routine:
  • Put wet and soiled diapers directly into a dry diaper pail. (We do not recommend wet pails.) Some people choose to line their pail with a pail liner. If you are past the exclusively breastfed stage, shake off any solids into the toilet, or rinse with aminishower.
  • Wash every 2 or 3 days.
  • Do a Hot Wash cycle with an extra rinse. If you use a pail liner, throw it in also. Use half the amount of detergent recommended by the detergent manufacturer.
  • If you have a bag or liner in the load, take it out before the final rinse, as it can hold water and prevent everything from rinsing completely.
  • Put everything (diapers, covers, wet bags, liners, wipes, inserts*, doublers, pockets, all-in-ones) in the dryerfor 60-80 minutes. You may wish to run a shorter dryer cycle, remove wet bags, covers, and pocket diapers (since they'll dry quickly) and then continue to dry everything else longer. Alternatively, hang everything outside for fresh air and sunshine!
*NOTE: Microfiber inserts will stay absorbent longer if line dried or dried on low.

Choosing a Detergent

The only thing less convenient about using cloth diapers today as compared to 20 years ago, is that detergents all have so much *stuff* added to them that doesn't react well with diapers. Our favorite detergent is Country Save, but if it's hard to find environmentally-friendly detergents in your area, Tide works well on diapers for most people. Note for Des Moines area people: Country Save is available at Little Padded Seats in Valley Junction, both in sample packs and 10 lb boxes.

If you want to see if your current favorite detergent will work, check out these charts for top loader and front loader machines. Formulas change, so always look at the ingredients. You want the simplest detergent possible, which happily is often the cheapest.

Ingredients to avoid:

  • optical brighteners
  • fabric softener
  • bleach, including color safe
  • enzymes
  • fragrance

Front Loader/HE Washers

High Efficiency washing machines are wonderful for the environment. The irony is, they're not optimal for washing cloth diapers. If you look inside a load of regular clothes in your front loader, you'll see 2-4 inches of water sloshing around the bottom of the drum. If you look in a load of diapers, chances are you will see no sloshing water. When you put in a load full of absorbent diapers, they tend to soak up a lot of the water, then they're just flopping around in there instead of washing!

What I do in my new front loader (the salesman told me I was nuts to want a new top loading machine, so I caved), is saturate the diapers before I start the wash cycle. After tossing the diapers in, I take a small pail of hot water and slowly pour it over the diapers. That way, the water the washer adds will actually wash the diapers!

Many front loaders have a Sanitary cycle with extra hot water. We don't recommend using this every time you wash your diapers, as it will shorten their useful life, but using it once a month or so will keep your diapers smelling fresh.

Choosing the right detergent is extra important with HE machines to avoid smelly and repelling diapers.

DOs and DON'Ts

DO fasten hook/loop closures onto fold back tabs to prevent diapers from getting stuck together into a "diaper chain". Diapers and covers that do not have fold back tabs should be turned inside out and fastened closed.

DO use the highest water level available in your machine to help rinse diapers completely.

DO unfold/unstuff diapers before placing in the washer to allow complete cleaning.

DO smell your diapers after washing. If they smell stinky or smell like detergent, do another hot rinse to get all the detergent out.

DON'T use bleach or fabric softener on any diapering products. Beware that "baby" detergents and "free & clear" or "natural" detergents can contain oils that leave a coating and affect absorbency.

DON'T use natural soaps, as the natural oils can leave a residue on microfleece causing it to repel liquid.

DON'T use Desitin or other diaper creams containing zinc oxide, as that is very difficult to wash out of diapers. You can use our olive oil-base Healing Salve safely with cloth diapers, or if you need to use stronger medicated creams, use a flushable liner.

Prepping New Diapers

All new diapers need to be washed before use. Everything except new prefolds only needs to be washed once.

Brand new prefolds will be flat and stiff, not soft and quilted as you might expect. Don't worry, they will soften up! Bleached prefolds need to be washed in hot and dried on high 2 times before use. Unbleached prefolds need to be washed 4-5 times to remove the natural oils and waxes in the cotton. Or you may boil unbleached prefolds to remove the oils and waxes.

Hemp productswill be ready to use after one wash, but they will continue to become more absorbent through the first 8-10 washes. They also may shrink about 10%.

NOTE: The first few times you wash hemp products or unbleached prefolds, you should not wash them together with microfleece products (like liners or pocket diapers). The natural oils in the hemp and cotton may stick to microfleece and cause it to repel moisture, which will cause leaks.

Stains and Odors

For diaper pail odor, try deodorizers, or simply sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of the pail.

Some people don't mind stains, as these are diapers, but I find it very easy to avoid stains with the help of the sun! As I am moving diapers from the washer to the dryer, I check for stains. I take any stained diapers outside and hang in the sun (this works even on cloudy days). Usually the stain is gone in just an hour or two, then I throw it in the dryer with the rest of the clean diapers to fluff it up. Even in the winter, I have a drying rack that I put out on our deck and lay stained diapers on. Sometimes the rack sits in several feet of snow, but it's still out there!

Ammonia smellis a common problem with cloth diapers. (Urine gradually turns into ammonia as it sits.) The first thing to do is to check the ingredients in your detergent and possibly switch brands. Be sure you're using enough detergent to get the diapers clean, and that you're washing in hot water. If you have a front loader, read our tips. You can also try bumGenius Odor Remover Spray.

If you still have ammonia smell after trying the above, try strippingyour diapers. This simply means running a full hot wash cycle without detergent, repeating until the water is free of suds. Then dry as usual.

properties;

Manuka Honey has an antibacterial activity, due primarily to hydrogen peroxide formed in a "slow-release" manner by the enzyme glucose oxidase present. Some honeys are no more antibacterial than sugar, while others can be diluted more than 100-fold and still halt the growth of bacteria. The difference in potency of antibacterial activity found among the different honeys is more than 100-fold.

Manuka Honey is the only honey available that is tested for its antibacterial activity. It contains an additional antibacterial component found only in honey produced from Leptospermum plants: what has been called the "Unique Manuka Factor" (UMF). There is evidence that the two antibacterial components may have a synergistic action.

Breastfeeding - Cuts Cancer Risks in Mothers (II)

Suckling helps prevent post-partum haemorrhage

Nursing her baby causes the mother's body to release oxytocin, which stimulates contractions which help shrink the uterus back to pre-pregnancy size while expelling the placenta.

These contractions also shut off the maternal blood vessels that formerly fed the baby and discourage excessive bleeding. Woman who choose not to breastfeed must be given synthetic oxytocin to insure against haemorrhaging.

Breastfeeding decrease insulin requirements for breastfeeding mothers who are diabetics.

Breastfeeding is a natural contraceptive

This is true only if you are exclusively breastfeeding, and have not gotten your period back following childbirth. Night nursing encourages longer amenorrhoea (periodlessness). If you really don't want to get pregnant again, use some back up birth control even if you haven't gotten your period again. You will have no way of knowing when your first ovulation will occur, and by the time you figure it out you may be expecting! Still, generally speaking, breastfeeding contributes to optimum child spacing.

Protects you against anaemia (ifon deficiency)

Since many exclusively breastfeeding mother do not begin to menstruate for a year or longer, their iron stores are not depleted by monthly bleeding.

Self confidence booster for mom

There is nothing more amazing than looking at plump 6-month=old baby and knowing that the only nutrition this happy little creature has received has come from your own body.

Breastfeeding - Cuts Cancer Risks in Mothers (I)

Breastfeeding reduces your risk of breast cancer

A fishing community living on boats in the delta of the Pearl River, Hong Kong, always breastfed their babies from one breast only, the right one, because their dress traditionally opened this side.

In a study of the relation between breastfeeding and cancer on the womenfolk there done by doctors in 2 hospitals in Hong Kong, it was found that 27 out of 34 women over 55 had breast cancer in the breast which they had not used for feeding.

Not breastfeeding increase your risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Not breastfeeding increase your risk of developing endometrial cancer.

Breastfeeding helps you get back into shape

Breastfeeding requires an average of 500 extra calories per day. Mothers who breastfed exclusively or partially had significantly larger reductions in hip circumference and were less above their pre-pregnancy weights at 1 month post -partum than mothers who fed formula exclusively.

Suckling helps shrink your uterus after childbirth

Nursing will help you to regain your figure more quickly also because the process of lactation causes the uterus (which has increased during pregnancy to about 20 times its normal size) to shrink more quickly to its pre-pregnancy size.

On the other hand, the uterus of the non-breastfeeding mother will never shrink back to its pre-pregnant size. It will always remain slightly enlarged.
