22 Strategies for Soothing a Colicky Baby ~ 3. Eliminate frantic feedings

Feed your baby before he's starving — if he's crying from hunger, he's more likely to gulp air along with his meal. Try to feed him in a calm environment: Turn down the lights, put on some soft music, and ask siblings to play quietly (you can always hope)

22 Strategies for Soothing a Colicky Baby ~1. Check the bottle

It may take some trial and error, because what helps one colicky baby might not do anything for another. But there are things you can try to help soothe your baby. Some will work best if tummy trouble is the issue, while others will be more helpful if your baby needs reassurance.

1. Check the bottle

If your baby's bottle-fed, it's important to find a bottle that won't contribute to his gulping. The more air he swallows with his feeding, the more likely tummy trouble will be.

The nipple should have a hole that's not too small, which could frustrate him and make him gulp for more food, or too large, which would cause the liquid to come at him too quickly.

Some bottles are specially designed to reduce air intake. Some are curved, while others have internal vents or liners, which prevent air bubbles from forming in the liquid and keep the nipple from collapsing.

Breastfeeding - Cuts Cancer Risks in Mothers (II)

Suckling helps prevent post-partum haemorrhage

Nursing her baby causes the mother's body to release oxytocin, which stimulates contractions which help shrink the uterus back to pre-pregnancy size while expelling the placenta.

These contractions also shut off the maternal blood vessels that formerly fed the baby and discourage excessive bleeding. Woman who choose not to breastfeed must be given synthetic oxytocin to insure against haemorrhaging.

Breastfeeding decrease insulin requirements for breastfeeding mothers who are diabetics.

Breastfeeding is a natural contraceptive

This is true only if you are exclusively breastfeeding, and have not gotten your period back following childbirth. Night nursing encourages longer amenorrhoea (periodlessness). If you really don't want to get pregnant again, use some back up birth control even if you haven't gotten your period again. You will have no way of knowing when your first ovulation will occur, and by the time you figure it out you may be expecting! Still, generally speaking, breastfeeding contributes to optimum child spacing.

Protects you against anaemia (ifon deficiency)

Since many exclusively breastfeeding mother do not begin to menstruate for a year or longer, their iron stores are not depleted by monthly bleeding.

Self confidence booster for mom

There is nothing more amazing than looking at plump 6-month=old baby and knowing that the only nutrition this happy little creature has received has come from your own body.

Breastfeeding - Cuts Cancer Risks in Mothers (I)

Breastfeeding reduces your risk of breast cancer

A fishing community living on boats in the delta of the Pearl River, Hong Kong, always breastfed their babies from one breast only, the right one, because their dress traditionally opened this side.

In a study of the relation between breastfeeding and cancer on the womenfolk there done by doctors in 2 hospitals in Hong Kong, it was found that 27 out of 34 women over 55 had breast cancer in the breast which they had not used for feeding.

Not breastfeeding increase your risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Not breastfeeding increase your risk of developing endometrial cancer.

Breastfeeding helps you get back into shape

Breastfeeding requires an average of 500 extra calories per day. Mothers who breastfed exclusively or partially had significantly larger reductions in hip circumference and were less above their pre-pregnancy weights at 1 month post -partum than mothers who fed formula exclusively.

Suckling helps shrink your uterus after childbirth

Nursing will help you to regain your figure more quickly also because the process of lactation causes the uterus (which has increased during pregnancy to about 20 times its normal size) to shrink more quickly to its pre-pregnancy size.

On the other hand, the uterus of the non-breastfeeding mother will never shrink back to its pre-pregnant size. It will always remain slightly enlarged.

Formula For Disaster (II)

Formula feeding increase baby's risk of ear infections

According to a 1994 study, otitis media (ear infection) is up to 3-4 times more prevalent in a formula-fed infants. In another study of Canadian Eskimos, it was found that middle ear infections where 5 times as common in the bottle-fed.

Formula-fed babies have a higher risk of developing certain childhood cancers (eg:lymphomas)

  • A Lancet study found that bottle-fed children have twice the risk of getting cancer before they reach 15, compared to babies breastfed 6 months or more.

  • A 1995 Swedish study has the answer: Mother's milk induce cancer cells to take their own lives!

According to 1993 study, formula feeding may increase risk of sudden infant death syndrome.

Formula-fed babies are more at risk for obesity in later life.

Formula For Disaster (I)

Formula feeding increase Baby Girls' risk of developing breast cancer in later life

Woman who were formula-fed as infants have higher rates of breast cancer as adults. For both pre-menopausal and post-menopausal breast cancer, woman who were breastfed as children, even if only for a short time, had 25% lower risk of developing breast cancer than woman who were bottle-fed as infants.

Formula feeding increase risk of baby developing Type 1 (juvenile, insulin-dependent) diabetes

The result of a 1994 study in Finland suggest that introduction of dairy products at a young age and high milk consumption during childhood increase the level of cow's milk antibodies in the children;s systems.

This factor is associated with the increased risk of insulin dependent diabetes.

Formula feeding increase chances if baby developing allergies

Babies in a highly allergic family are "potentially allergic infants". According to a study, they run a 60% risk of developing one or other allergic disease notably asthma, eczema, hay fever and allergic rhinitis.

However, if the mother breastfeeds, and during pregnancy and lactation avoids any foods (especially eggs), the baby's allergy risk drops to a low 15%.
